Introduction of Shanghai

The OC welcomes you to participate in Shanghai 2022 FISU World University Championship Futsal, which will be held in Shanghai, China from June 10 to 16 2024.

Shanghai is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, the longest river in China, on the west bank of the East China Sea and in the middle of Chinas coastline. Through its coastal position Shanghai acts as a link between China’s inland regions and the outside world, and it is comfortable with both eastern and western cultures.

With a history of more than 700 years, Shanghai was once the financial center of the Far East. Since the reforms that began in the 1990’s great changes have taken place in the city. The municipal government is working towards building Shanghai into a modern metropolis and a global economic, financial, trading, shipping and technological innovation center.

Shanghai has a land area of 6,340.5 square kilometers and a population of 24.87 million permanent residents at the end of 2020. The municipality is the largest economic center in China and also a major port with per capita GDP reaching 155,600 yuan in 2020.

The city continues to open up to foreign investment and trade. By the end of 2020, Shanghai has absorbed investment from 189 countries and regions, registered 771 regional headquarters and 481 R&D centers set up by multinational companies.

Shanghai Port handled 405.8 million tons of cargos in 2020, including 43.50million TEUs, ranked first in the world for 11 consecutive years. Shanghai Port has established container trade with more than 500 ports in 214 countries and regions, serving shipping liners that ply routes between Shanghai and major ports around the world, making the city a dynamic hub of people, trade, capital, technology and information.

The fluent communications systems and exchanges between people, commodities, capital, technology and information has made Shanghai a vibrant city.

Shanghai is also a prominent historical city in China with a rich cultural heritage. The vintage western style buildings on the Bund and the modern Lujiazui Financial Center in Pudong face each other across the Huangpu River. On the other hand, Yuyuan Garden and Longhua Temple display graceful ancient Chinese architecture.

In the last few years, various fashion shows, art and cultural festivals have attracted many foreign tourists. The shopping malls on Nanjing road, Huaihai Road and in the Xujiahui Business Center showcase the most stylish and chic products in the world, and are filled with people everyday.
